All of these are from the top of my head. There might be more, but these are the only ones I could think of right now.

What I’m saying is, Fate/Zero was good, but it is far, far from being the best. I guess if you love talking heads throwing philosophy at each other with the occasional grandiose battle scenes, you must have loved Fate/Zero to death. For me, it was an anime that brought out almost total indifference, with the occasional mental stimulation and adrenaline rushes.

As much as I like Gen Urobuchi’s stories or his way of writing dialogue, the directing during conversations is so damn boring I wanted to bang my head on the wall. The conversations that WERE great though, were the ones involving Rider and Waver – but these scenes are so sparsely given to us by the second season.

My brain just shut down on several occasions, especially when Saber and Lancer start to talk to each other. Honestly, I skipped some of these scenes so my mind wouldn’t break. Saber is like Sayaka from Madoka here, only more annoying and less convincing. There were also many moments where exposition takes main stage, where somebody simply tells the audience what they could have animated. I understand that they’re adapting a novel, but it wouldn’t hurt to put effort in creating something… you know… animated.

All that aside, Fate/Zero is still what it is – good story, mostly bland characters, great writing, less-than-amazing directing and an underwhelming ending. If I were a person who reads light novels regularly, I might have just opted to read the novel instead, or left the adaptation to someone crazy like Ikuhara, Nakamura or Shinbo (I know, this will end up messy, but at least it’ll become more entertaining).

So yeah. An overall good anime, albeit with a long annoying streak of bland conversations about chivalry and other ideals that should have died 600 years ago. Not a must-watch, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to see one of the more influential anime out there. In the end, I decided to give Fate/Zero my personal MAL rating of 7 (admit it, you’re surprised at how high I rated this anime). Bonus points for amazing OPs and EDs.

I somewhat enjoyed Fate/Zero, but in the hands of a truly seasoned director and/or staff, this would’ve been a superb anime. It’s great the way it is, but the poor pacing and clumsy direction worked against it most of the time. I also feel like what’s really stopping Gen from making this a masterpiece is that he loves to explore themes and pick them apart, and he uses his characters to simply fulfill that purpose. This is possibly why Rider and Waver are the most liked pair in F/Z, they feel more like human characters rather than mere concepts given a voice.

I’ve got to agree one-hundred percent. It was good, but the pacing was poor and the few good scenes were ruined by plenty of boring ones. On top of that, the only good characters were Rider, Waver and Kiritsugu (Kariya could have easily made it on this list). I don’t feel like I’ve wasted my time watching it, but it is definitely the most overrated show I’ve seen in while.

    • @fkeroge says:

I really wouldn’t say that it’s the most overrated show – that title belongs to Sakamichi no Apollon. Fate/Zero was good, it was overrated, but at least it was good, unlike that other show.

  3. rds says:

    @fkeroge, you are ridiculous.

    1) Fate/Zero is a fighting anime

    2) in the list of 56 animes (you like) there are pretty much no fighting anime, afaik.

    3) so, you don’t like fighting anime. Fine, I don’t like fighting anime myself. Won’t watch fate/zero even if I am paid to do so.

    4) if you don’t like like a particular genre, just don’t watch it, ok?

    5) please, don’t be a jerk who watches what he doesn’t like (why?) and then poo-poo it all over internet.

    • @fkeroge says:

Oh, dear. Not another idiot. “Fate/Zero is a fighting anime,” dear lord, why are you so stupid? Fate/Zero is less a “fighting anime”, whatever that is, and more of a talking anime. I don’t even know why people like you are allowed to touch computers.

And I never said I didn’t like Fate/Zero. I liked it enough to give it a frickin’ score of 7. Are you sure you know how to read? It seems that you don’t.

“Fate/Zero is less a “fighting anime”, whatever that is, and more of a talking anime”

this is just stupid – by your logic ANY anime is “talking anime”. and yes, whatever you think, there is fighting anime genre and fate/zero is right in the middle of it.

        • Wut.

Fate/Zero isn’t really a fighting anime, if you think about it. The premise may be a gigantic battle royale to get a wish granted, but fundamentally, F/Z is an exploration of human frailties: the Utilitarianism of Kiritsugu, the blatant hedonism of Gilga and the conflicting teachings which form the core of Kirei’s character are the main characters of the show. If anything, the fighting is thrown in to give the characters ways to demonstrate their convictions besides just exposition.

By your argument, Madoka’s a fighting anime, because they kill witches.

  4. Gon says:

I normally don’t call people out but let’s be HONEST here. You gotta be completely blind to call this anime a non/fighting….
90% of this anime was FIGHTING between the damn servants and masters.. You’re so WRONG on that one that is not even funny.

And most of the animes you mentioned in the list aren’t better and you know it ;0 Tamayura Hitotose????????? Loooooooolllll Ga-rei??????

You are just butthurt dude. Maybe you couldn’t understand the deep thinking/thoughts talked about in Fate/Zero? I do agree there was some talking going on but nothing was outside the main story and plot and it wasn’t as MUCH as you are making it be. By the way Steins:gate had a TON of talking too so you are contradicting yourself on that too.

And no Saint Seiya in the list ? another fail. Oh wait I forgot… Your the kind that loves echi/high school/moe/girly/ anime 😦 course it wouldn’t be there. Watch better shit dude..

    • @fkeroge says:

      You a grade schooler, bub?

I’ll be HONEST with you: you need more experience if you think you’re smart with that comment of yours.

You FIGHTING me has some serious consequences. Learn from the previous fools so that you wouldn’t be grouped with them.

You have lots of WRONGly spelled words and bad grammar.

      Take my advice: LURK MOAR.
