Preview Review : Thoughts on Winter 2010/2011

Since The Cart Driver seems to have replaced Chartfag in terms of releasing speed, I figured, heck, it’s time for another season preview review.  And as usual, thanks to a potload of crack and a crapload of ballsyness (and since this guy takes ages to write anything) , Imma going to review every single show, as well as some OVAs of particular interest.

Well, let’s get crackin’, shall we?

(all background information shamelessly ripped off

Fractale ( A1-Pictures ):

The story takes place on an island, where a “Fractale System” is beginning to collapse. One day, Clain finds an injured girl called Phryne under a cliff. She disappears leaving a pendant. Clain sets out for a journey with the girl-shaped avatar Nessa to look for Phryne and discovers the secret of the Fractale System.

Well. That helps a lot. Searching  up the character information gives me this:

Age: 10

That’s the only thing on her profile.

Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season (Production I.G.) :

Sequel to the first season. Sawako Kuronuma is misunderstood due to her resemblance to the ghost girl from The Ring. But one day the nicest boy in the class befriends her. Lots of blushing and hand holding follow.

Well, that doesn’t help . At all. It’s the same synopsis as that of Season 1. Nevertheless, for the very fact that it’s a sequel to Kimi ni Todoke, it’s instantly on my watch list.

Gosick ( Bones ) :

The year is 1924, the place, Sauville, a small European country neatly tucked beside the Alps…

Kazuya Kujo has been studying abroad at the prestigious Saint Marguerite Academy, where urban legends and horror stories are all the rage. Most Kazuya ignores but the story of the Queen Berry, a mysterious ghost ship, really gets to him. Of course, his brainy friend Victorique is much more intrigued by true stories, and she uses her unrivaled logic to solve mysteries even the town’s famous detective can’t. Ironically, it is Victorique’s inquisitive nature that leads the duo to board a ship that matches the Queen Berry’s description to a tee, a ship that might just hold the key to solving a sinister mystery…

Where did we see that before? Oh right, Milky Holmes.

Of course, I’m expecting this to be much better than Milky Holmes. After all, it sounds like it actually involves detective work and mystery.  I have the weirdest feeling that the art for this show will be great- it simply has to be.

Chances of references to Sherlock Holmes: High.

Beelzebub ( Studio Pierrot )

The story follows the “strongest juvenile delinquent”, Oga Tatsumi, a first year in “Ishiyama High” the school for delinquents. One day while sleeping next to a river he sees a man floating down it, he pulls him to shore and the man splits in half revealing a baby boy. This boy is the son of the demon king and he has been chosen as the one to raise it with the baby’s demon maid Hilda. The story follows his life with the child and at the delinquent school.

Oh lord. This has so much potential, yet I have a gut feeling that I’ll be sorely disappointed.

The Wandering Son (AIC)

If you have read the chart, don’t be fooled. It sounds like a simple comedy about a feminine boy and a masculine girl.  Surely, this Takatsuki they mention is the girl, and the boy is Nitori, right? Hahaha. But check this out:

The story depicts a young boy named Shuuichi Nitori who wants to be a girl, and his friend Yoshino Takatsuki, a girl who wants to be a boy. The series deals with issues such as transsexuality, gender identity, and the beginning of puberty.

(Source: Wikipedia)

I am willing to bet you that the girl in the picture is Nitori and the boy is Takatsuki.
AIC? Produce thoughtful and deep-running shows? I doubt.

Nevertheless, this’ll be interesting…

Chances of Traps appearing: More than the chance of Traps – not – appearing.

Merry Dream Eater ( JC STAFF)

Ten years ago Fujiwara noticed he had a power to see multicolored auras surrounding the person’s body. Ever since then he’s been having a weird dream about a war with cats. Then one day a mysterious girl falls on top of him…

>Wild Merry Nightmare appears!

>Wild Merry Nightmare uses Dream Eater!

Sorry, couldn’t resist. But seriously, what in the world is this supposed to be? The synopsis sounds …too muddled for me to read it properly. An aura? A mysterious girl? Cats? Lots and lots of cats? Who happen to be enemies? It’s confusing, it’s nonsensical, it sounds like a failure, and definitely it’ll be ridiculous.

Chances of Valence watching this: 101%

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

SHAFT. SHAFT. Oh lord.

Director : Shinbo Akiyuki

Wolverine ( Madhouse )

Frankly, I’m having doubts about this. From what I’ve read, not much people have watched , much less enjoyed , Iron Man. They supposedly altered Stark’s personality so much that he doesn’t resemble the original.

But what is the point of watching something exactly the same as the original?

Chances of references to the X-Men : low

Level E (David Production , Studio Pierrot)

Tsutsui Yukitaka was a freshman who had just entered a high school, and he was hoped to be a good baseball player. When he moved to a new apartment, there was a man in the room. He said he was an alien and lost his memory.

The first thing I thought was that this would be nothing but Arakawa Under the Bridge, but genderswapped, so that everyone was male. However, this caught my eye:

Actually, he was the first prince of Planet Dogra, and he was the man who had the best brain and the worst nature.

A show..about an actual alien? Who looks like Nino’s father? Ay caramba.

CHANCE OF REFERENCES TO NINO WHILE BLOGGING : As high as the amount of gravity on Venus.

Dragon Crisis! ( Studio DEEN )

A normal high school boy Kisaragi Ryuji’s peaceful life is turned into an adventure by the return of his second cousin Eriko. Ryuji and Eriko seize a relic box from a black broker. In the box, they find a red dragon girl Rose. In order to protect Rose from the black organization, Ryuji decides to fight using his power as a relic handler.

If it’s anything I’ve ever learnt from watching anime, it would be that most, if not all animals must be drawn and depicted as jailbait. Rose is no different. How does she resemble a dragon? Maybe she turns into a dragon. Or she’s supposedly a dragon that resembes a human. That can lead to so many …..interesting situations.

<tilts glasses>

Chances of ‘How to Train your Dragon’ sounding more….risque : 100%

Infinite Stratos (8-bit)

Japan engineered an armed powered exoskeleton “Infinite Stratos” (IS) and it became the mainstream of weapons. Since only women can operate IS, women dominate the society over men. Orimura Ichika is a 15 year old boy and accidentally touches an IS placed in the IS pilot training school. He is found to be the only man who can operate IS and forced to enter the training school. Ichika’s busy school life surrounded by girls has begun.

It sounds like an atypical setting for a harem. However, it seems to be much, much different. Firstly, the setting. Women are in power (meaning a much more efficient society) yet it sounds so compelling to see a single male pilot in this female-dominated world. If all turns out the way I envision it, it’ll probably be a revamped and more compelling version of Star Driver.

This sounds interesting. I doubt Ichika can change the state of affairs in Japan simply by becoming a pilot, but nevertheless, this’ll be on my watch list.

Chance of a mysterious shady underground organization of male pilots : High

Is this a Zombie? ( Studio DEEN )

Aikawa Ayumu is a normal high school boy. One day he is killed by a serial killer and revived as a zombie by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe. He starts to serve Eu as her guard but he happens to deprive the mahou shoujo Haruna of her magic power. Haruna orders Ayumu to fight against the anti-mahou shoujo system “Megalo” in her place.

Another mahou shoujo anime.

Being a skeptic, such a bastardization of the genre of zombie shows will raise a few eyebrows if you ask me. A zombie…revived…to fight against a system? By how? Shambling towards it?

I can even guess that this sounds too much like Zero no Tsukaima , only that instead of a spineless human boy, we have a spineless zombie boy. Not like there’s much difference anyway.

Haruna’s weapon of choice – a chainsaw of sorts – looks exactly like Panty’s machine-operated oversized dildo, which coincidentally appears in the episode in which the angels fight against zombies…….

Haiyoru! Nyaruani: Remember My Love (Craft-Sensei) ( DLE )

Animated Flash shorts based on the light novel series “Haiyore! Nyaruko-san.” In these shorts, Nyarlko, an anthropomorphized female version of Nyarlathotep from the Cthulhu Mythos, is constantly being told off by Mahiro, a normal human boy, for all the crazy or stupid things she does.

In one of the shorts, Nyarlko is drawing a cover design for a body pillow. It turns out that the pillow’s subject is a half-dressed Mahiro in what appears to be a hot and heavy scene with Nyarlko. Naturally, Mahiro proceeds to stab Nyarlko in the hand with a fork and threatens to kill her if she releases the pillow design.

Other shorts revolve around various gags and occasionally feature Cthuko, an anthropomorphized female version of Cthugha, who’s madly in love with Nyarlko.

For one, Cthugha, the girl madly in love with Nyarlko, looks like this:

While in the Lovecraft mythos, Cthugha is a giant, living ball of flame. (See those fireballs in her hair?)

That’s adorable and all, but hold on to your fucking seats, people. The main character, Nyarlko, looks like this:

Wearing a short mini-skirt.

A squid-like hairclip.

This,my friends, is where things get interesting.

Nyarlathotep, as any Lovecraft reader would know, is also known as The Crawling Chaos, and a deity of malign. For one, Nyarlathotep was first described to be a tall man who looked like an Egyptian pharaoh. That isn’t the best part yet.

Nyarlathotep’s true form, if I’m not mistaken, is like this:

Keep that in mind. Keep that forever in mind.

EDIT: This is a sequel. Holy fan-tucking-tastic shit.

Rio: Rainbow Gate! ( Xebec )

Xebec. XEBEC. After producing the steaming pile of cr- MM!, they now roll out this show based on Rio, a character from slot machines who supposedly appeared on Dead or Alive. Honestly, I have no idea what this show will be about. It can’t possibly about her playing slot machines for the whole damn season, could it?

Chances of the show promoting gambling : Surprisingly, low.

Houkago no Pleiades ( GAINAX )

Gainax seems to like making shows that make the viewer go, ‘WTF?’. This show veers dangerously close to that line. Seriously, from what I can tell by the description, which describes it only as a project between Gainax and Subaru, I think it’s about schoolgirls who race actual cars. No kidding.

Chances of car accidents : low.

The show which features 3 girls who are much more perverted than the 3 in Kodomo no Jikan and yet turns out to have even more dirty jokes yet less entertainment value –  2. ( BRIDGE)

Thankfully, it’s only 8 episodes, and Kodomo no Jikan is getting a DVD special. All is good.

I don’t like you at all, Big brother! (ZEXCS)

Junior High student Nao’s brother complex is so strong, it’s almost at the point of incest. She’s determined to make her brother, High School student Shuusuke, see her as a woman. So determined, that she goes as far as going into his room to throw away all his non-incest related porn. But as she’s looking for his porno stash, she finds a photo album… and she’s not in any of his childhood pictures. What is going on?

(Source: MangaUpdates)

If it’s anything I’ve learnt from recent titles, any title that has a statement in it is a lie.

Needless to say, this seems to be intriguing, since the childhood pictures part really makes me want to watch to find out. However, if it goes for the ‘Hey brother we’re not related by blood so sex me’ route I’m going to bawl my eyes out in despair.

Chances of it being much more perverted than OreImo: 90%.

Freezing (Media Factory)

Set in a slightly futuristic world where Earth has been invaded and is at war with aliens from another dimension called the Nova, the story follows the adventures of a Japanese boy named Kazuya Aoi who enrolls for training at a special school for genetically modified girls called Pandoras who battle the aliens, and their male partners, called Limiters, who use a special power called “freezing” to limit their opponent’s mobility. The protagonist makes the acquaintance of an unusual older girl named Bridgette L. Satellizer who appears to be the most powerful Pandora in her class, but has not yet chosen a male partner to be her Limiter, and in spite of the warnings of all his friends, he decides to be her Limiter.

(Source: Wikipedia)

I hope it isn’t Queen’s Blade. That is all. It seems really interesting and all, but if that image I found reflects the show itself, then goddamn it.

Chances of me being frozen : low.

Starry Sky (Studio Deen)

The heroine, Tsukiko, enrolled to a school that was recently changed from all-boys school to co-ed. Since the area where the school is conveniently rural and the rather exclusive curriculums the school has, up until now the heroine is the only one female who enrolled to the school.

In Starry Sky, the 12 constellations of the Zodiac are personified into handsome young men. The anime will be directed by Kiyomo Sayaka who worked with Vampire Knight. Similar to Hetalia – Axis Powers, Starry Sky’s anime will be distributed through the website and other means.

Honestly, if Hetalia was any indication, this show appears to be a gigantic reverse harem. I mean, the situation is perfect, and I see no other way for the show to develop. I’m not a big fan of reverse harems, so I’ll give it a skip.

Suite Precure – meh.

Cardfight!! Vanguard – meh.

Usagibgoya- meh.

Yuri Seijin Naoko-san (ufotable)

Comedy manga with blue jokes. Naoko-san is an alien from “Yuri Star”. She is plotting to conquer the Earth by Yuri-nization. Misuzu is a junior high girl and is always troubled by Naoko-san, who lives on the roof of her house.

Something about the mix of aliens and a planet full of nothing but lesbians interests me a lot. A LOT.

Mirai Nikki (asread) : Middle school 2nd year, Amano Yukiteru, a boy who has a problem making friends. faithfully keeps a cell phone diary. Yukiteru began to imagine things like a friend called Deus Ex Machina , the Lord of Time & Space. Seeing his miserable state, Deus gives him a new ability. His diary will now record events that will happen in the near future, forcing him to participate in a game , the winner becoming her successor.

Chances of watching this : 100%.

Morita-san wa Mukuchi

Morita Mayu, a high school girl, is extremely reticent, her silence and habit of looking at people’s eyes straightly sometimes cause misunderstanding. The reason behind it is not because she doesn’t like to talk nor because she has nothing to say. The reason she rarely speaks is due to the fact she thinks too much before speaking, thus losing the timing to speak altogether. But she lives a happy school life. MEH.

Supernatural : The Animation (MADHOUSE)

Based on the live-action CW show Supernatural. The anime project will remake the best episodes from the live-action version and depict episodes not seen in the live-action version. Those original episodes will include prologues of the Winchester brothers’ childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters .

This is a must-watch. This might be the first time Western media has been turned into anime..

Oh what am I saying, we have Iron Man, Wolverine, Nyarlko and if I’m not wrong, X-Men coming soon next year…

Overall, THE SEASON LOOKS PROMISING (GASP). But I’m too much of a optimist, and every time the season ends, I only feel really, really disappointed. Fingers crossed.

Now, to work on an upcoming blogging project.

  1. Ming Xuan says:

    Oh yes! Yuri!

  2. Carillus says:

The original artist for Gosick is one of my favourite artists, so I’m guessing art will be pretty good.

I’ve been following the manga for “I Don’t Like You at All, Big Brother!” for quite a while now, so I can say if it’s any guide, it’ll be pretty good.

Overall though, I’m not really looking forward to much next season. It’ll mostly be the continues from this season that I’ll be watching.

    • Valence says:

Original art good =/= adaptation good. Adaptations have this amazing ability to fuck things up.

The problem is that every season, nothing seems interesting. So my strategy is to dive headfirst and sieve through the shows.

      • Ming Xuan says:

Yup, at first I thought Shiryaku Ika Musume was those boring moe shows, but I fell in love with it. But most of the time…my first hand impressions were right

  3. alucard13mm says:

nothing i really want to watch… oh wells ;S

  4. Nopy says:

I’m definitely going to be watching Kimi ni Todoke, loved the first season.

The Wandering Son sounds interesting, you shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss it. I’m also looking forward to the two mahou shoujo series ^.^

  5. hiroy_raind says:

The Wandering Son looks like it will be very interesting from the production quality. I mean, if AIC is only makin one anime for a season, you know where the budget wents.
If you haven’t seen the trailer, please look for it.

Even on it’s source manga, Dream Eater Merry was confusing. Added with the fact that I tend not to like JC Staff’s adaptations, I get the feeling that I might drop it after taking a couple episode. Shame, since the mangaka made some good Touhou doujinshis.

When I first heard of Infinite Stratos’s “only females can operate it, but our male main character can too”, I immediately thought of Dual Parralel Adventure.

  6. Yi says:

I am pretty sure I’ll be watching Kimi Todo 2 and Gosick. I might pick up the mahou shoujo show, but not sure. Things will probably change depending on the hype.

  7. Azure Hoshizora says:

    Well that was one frikking long post… ^^;;

Madoka Magica seems like the most anticipated show of winter. For some unexplained magical reasons I feel obliged to favor shows with the words “Magical Girl” in their titles; but my heart is still with Nanoha and Fate…

Is this a Zombie? Not so much… I like chainsaws though…

    • Valence says:

Chainsaws and mahou shoujo don’t mix in my definition … although I’m quite sure it’ll be a sham compared to the Nanoha franchise.

      • Azure Hoshizora says:

My gut is telling me chainsaws might do well with magical yanderes…

Cuz the Nanoha series is now at legendary status. I probably wouldn’t be able to help it and compare them though… ._.

        • Valence says:

After a while it seems like mahou shoujo = nanoha ._.

          • Azure Hoshizora says:

Despite her befriending attempts not being very Mahou shoujo-like…

            • Valence says:

What’d you mean? I thought all mahou shoujos make friends by blasting each other with giant beams of destruction?

              • Nestor says:

Yeah, bu t Nanoha got extra points for not naming her attacks with the word ‘love’ or other ridiculously shoujo stuff (and I still believe it’s actually ‘Raging Heart’).

Freezing manga is actually good – much more action than what the fanservice may suggest – but considering just how crappy most manga-to-anime adaptation, I won’t be surprised if this turns into an actionless fanservice-fest

  8. My to-watch list for the season includes Gosick, Merry Dream Eater, Is This a Zombie? (I have to…), and yuri aliens, of course.

  9. Canne says:

Kimi ni todoke 2 is a must see but the others are still undecided for me.
There are so many shows with high chance of you watching…can you actually watch all of those? (That can be exhaustive)
