Angel Beats 05

Yurippe and the SSS attempt to defeat Tenshi/Angel through a different battlefield – destroying her reputation.

Basically, Yurippe’s plan is to force Tenshi to lose her reputation by making her score almost nothing – but interfering with the exam process of course.

Cue what seems to be 15 minutes of pointless comedy as ‘Christ” switched Angel’s exam papers with joke papers for every exam. Their plan was to distract the entire class while Christ switches – with stuff like stripping and professing their love for the teacher, and then ejecting from their seats into the ceiling.

So in the end, their plan succeeds just as planned and Angel resigns from her post. Operation Tornado starts again, with the random music inserts and what not.

Angel doesn’t attack them, she just becomes passive, they eat their dinner, but scratch that.

I can’t keep on reviewing this episode. Something is burning within me. A powerful need to post about something.

Posting about Kanade.

Angel’s name is revealed to be Tachibana Kanade in this episode – she’s essentially just like them, a student in this episode. Although she seems to have taken a liking to Otonashi.

All of a sudden, she makes me want to buy Dengeki G.

But I digress. I’m here to talk about her character.

She’s my favourite character in this season right now.

Why? She’s not only the most mysterious, she’s the one which makes you toss about in bed, thinking about her situation.

After she resigns, she doesn’t attack the SSS anymore, even giving Otonashi her coupon for the school’s insanely hot Mapo Tofu. People probably say that this is nothing much, but I think otherwise. I’m intrigued to watch the rest of Angel Beats because of her. Who is she? Why is she here? Everyone has some kind of an emotional, traumatic backstory in Angel Beats, so I’m sure she has one too.

It’s like she’s a killing machine freed from the will of her master. Freedom  – but what are the repercussions?

Her situation also makes you wonder : Is there a God at all? If not for her existence, Angel Beats would suck. If they replaced her with some kind of killing drone, it’d suck. Which was why I kind of like her now. She gives the entire series something which brings it above the others. Comedy? Check. Slice of life? Check. Psychological? Slightly, check. Fantasy? Check. Action? Check.  Imagine Clannad~AS or some other sad Animecombined with all the fighting anime you can think of – add weaponry and God, and you’ve got Angel Beats. It’s twisting every single anime cliche.

To be frank, that's what I thought at first.

So in conclusion, the reason I like Kanade is because:

  1. She’s mysterious and has thought-provoking
  2. She brings an edge to Angel Beats
  3. She’s kuudere
  4. She’s less annoying than the other characters.
  5. She just makes me feel sad…

Right from the start I’ve been interested in Angel, or Kanade now. From the first episode she didn’t come across as being “the bad guy”, more the misunderstood guy. Otonashi approached her and asks her to prove he is really dead, and from then on they’ve just assumed she is their enemy. It’s felt more like the SSS are just bullying her, most likely because of her position.

Of course episode 5 really brought this out in the open. What with her dropping her meal ticket in the ruckus and then Otonashi eating “the spoils of war”.

Although for me my favourite character so far has to be Yui♥Nyan, purely for the humour she brings and hyper personality. TK is a close second.

Yes, same sentiments here =D Does God really exist? Kanade seems like she’s forced to do all of this, which was why I’m interested in her.

Yui was spunky, but annoying during her episode ._.

TK’s fun, but he hardly does anything worth mentioning =(

I like Kanade too, but I just wanted to point out that the SSS stole her ticket with those giant fans, she didn’t give it to Otonashi. The fact that she’s not an angel really twists things around because now the SSS don’t have a physical person to fight against. I’m interested in seeing how they’ll handle the new student council president and his army of NPCs.

  4. Valence says:

Oops, I missed it there. But I bet she’d give it to Otonashi anyway, since she seems to like him.

What I’m interested in now was firstly : What will the SSS be fighting against now? And secondly : What will Tenshi be doing now?

  5. Nopy says:

I’m also interested in seeing what the SSS will be fighting against and what Tenshi will do. I hope they let her join their group.

  6. Valence says:

I bet that if she joins, she’ll be overly clingy to Otonashi ._.
