Who am I?: I am @fkeroge, a Chemical Engineering student from the Philippines. If you’re asking about my age, I am in my late teens. I am an author of this very site, Ambivalence, or is it Ambiguity?. You can find me at these places:
MAL | Twitter | Google+ | Steam |
What kind of person are you?: I like to think that I’m just like everybody else, with his own tastes and preferences. I have nothing against anything or anybody and I rarely get angry, but I am easily annoyed. I can be pretty stupid at times, especially when it comes to controlling my excitement. I am easily entertained yet also easily bored.
I like philosophy, psychology and basically anything that has something to do with human behavior. When I read posts from other blogs, I can’t help but to use their posts as references for me to make a background of the author’s online persona.
What kinds of anime do you like?: I am a fan of anything interesting. I like anime that entertain me and dislike those that don’t. Because of that, my tastes are pretty mainstream in nature, except for a few exceptions.
What are the particular things that you look for in an anime?: Well, I admit that I do have a weakness for drama in my anime, and that has both helped me find my favorite anime and anime that I disliked, so I guess that if an anime looks like a god drama, I’ll definitely check it out.
Like I said earlier, I like psychology and philosophy. Of course, I would want to watch anime dealing with these concepts in depth, as long as they’re entertaining enough.
But I guess my biggest weakness would be yuri. Those of you who have known me for a while would agree. If a show has yuri potential, I will always try to watch it, for better or worse.
Why did you start to watch anime in the first place?: Read this.
What are your standards when it comes to rating your anime?: I only have a single standard for rating anime, and that is its entertainment value. I break down my scores in MAL in this manner:
-
10 – The pinnacle of entertainment.
-
9 – Kept my eyes glued to the screen. The best of the best.
-
8 – The best anime I can hope for. I consider anime reaching this score to be must-watches.
-
7 – The better anime. The types that should be watched if you have free time on your hands.
-
6 – Good anime. These are anime that should be watched if you don’t have anything better to do.
-
5 – Average anime. Has entertainment value, but I guess you’re better off doing something else entirely.
-
4 – Bad anime. These are the kind of anime that should be watched, if you want to be amazed at how bad anime can be; “so bad, it’s good” quality.
-
3 – Very bad anime – These anime induce sleepiness or rage. Try to stay away from these. “Terribad” quality.
-
2 – The lowest score that I have given so far. The “so bad, it’s not even funny” level. May cause narcolepsy. This score is reserved mostly for horrible anime extras, but I can also give this score to TV series that try hard enough.
-
1 – I wish the day that I give this score would never come.
What are your top 30 anime?: Take a look. It is still under construction, but this list gets updated continuously, so it’s always correct.
30. Hyakko (Nippon Animation)
MAL SCORE: 7
Hyakko was formerly my pick for the most underrated anime that I have seen. It has a very colorful cast of characters. It knows what it’s doing and does it well. It’s not particularly funny or deep, and it lacks the usual feel of similar shows. But what makes Hyakko special is that it’s good without trying too hard – making use of the individual strengths of the characters’ personalities. It’s just… a fun show to watch, and I think that’s the most important thing about slice of life… no, any show.
29. Amagami SS/SS+ (AIC)
MAL SCORE: 7/7
Amagami SS/SS+ made it into this list due to the sheer sweetness and pure, unadulterated romance that it presented. Sure, it has its share of cliches and it is a bit chauvinistic at times, but Amagami SS avoided pitfalls that most harem anime run into by presenting itself in an omnibus format. This meant less awkward moments, less angst, and more character focus where it is needed. Now this is how I like my pure romance anime. Just bar the existence of the second season’s final episode.
28. Air (Kyoto Animation)
MAL SCORE: 7
I watched Air when I was still an upstart anime fan. It was one of my first 15 anime. Air is the lesser of the KyoAni x Key collaborations, and the last one I have watched. But still, this anime still took a place in my heart because of a single character. Air also manages get its drama to be more on filial side, my ultimate weakness when it comes to drama.
“Goal…!”
I died a little inside just from that line alone.
27. The Time of Eve (Studio Rikka)
MAL SCORE: 7
The Time of Eve gave me one of the best treats in terms of visuals. Arguably one of the best-looking anime of all time. But what really made the anime click for me was the anime’s down-to-earth presentation of its sci-fi themes. While The Time of Eve’s story can be called typical light sci-fi, it has this particular air of sincerity and simple elegance that most sci-fi just don’t provide. It’s less a science fiction story than it is a story about people, and I love it for that.
26. To Aru Kagaku no Railgun (JC Staff)
MAL SCORE: 7
Index could have taken this spot, but I keep asking myself: Why the heck is Railgun a whole lot better than Index? I mean, Index had a better premise and plot. It had well-choreographed fight scenes and visual effects. Railgun pales in comparison to Index if we simply consider these things. But Index had one thing that made it the lesser of the two: Touma. Less Touma and more Misaka and Kuroko meant more enjoyment. Not to mention that Railgun was more memorable compared to Index in terms of characters, entertainment and music.
25. K-On!! (Kyoto Animation)
MAL SCORE: 7
The high-budget production was great and all, but the overall change in tone of the series from vaguely music-related to complete focus on the girls’ interactions was actually what I would consider to be its greatest strength. It doesn’t attempt on living up to any stupid expectations like the presence of a good narrative or strong characters and just gives its fans what they came for. It’s lazy, pandering entertainment, and a very well-produced one at that.
24. Lucky Star (Kyoto Animation)
MAL SCORE: 7
Lucky Star is a show full of win. It’s self-aware, it’s cute, and it handles its otaku-oriented jokes well. I still ask myself why I liked Lucky Star so much even though I watched this when I was still fairly new to anime, the only ones I watched before this were mostly ordinary anime that won’t really make me relate to many of the inside jokes here (well, the Da Capo parody had me, but still…). It was when I watched it again that I found out why – it’s just plain fun to watch, not only for the jokes, but the commentary that the characters give about mundane real life problems like eating ice cream to chocolate cornets to going to the dentist. You know, I also thought of the best way to eat ice cream cones while walking home from school, so I can sort of relate.
23. Astalotte no Omocha! (Diomedea)
MAL SCORE: 7
Have you ever heard of anime that is despised by those who haven’t seen it, yet mostly loved by those who did? Astalotte no Omocha! is a prime example. Many have been turned off by the misleading synopsis for this show, but I tell you, the show is much, much better than what the synopsis would have you think. Sure, there are times when the show gets awkward with its fanservice, but when the show gets serious, it can be really touching and heartwarming. And you guys know I like touching and heartwarming shows, right?
22. Bake/Nisemonogatari (Studio SHAFT)
MAL SCORE: 7/7
After thinking about it, I decided that I equally liked Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari. When it comes to intelligently-written dialogue, NisiOisiN really nailed it with Bake, and when the time came to titillate the audience with both non-conventional animation and the far easier to understand smut, Shaft delivered spectacularly. Witty, sharp and maybe a bit too wordy – that’s NisiOisiN for you. Quirky, random and totally unpredictable – that’s Shaft on LSD.
24. Fate/Zero (ufotable)
MAL SCORE: 7
20. Candy Boy (AIC)
MAL SCORE: 8
You are now wondering how Candy Boy ended up in this list. Honestly, I’m still amazed by how much I ended up loving this show. It’s a short series, but there’s no denying that this show is one of the sweetest and simplest anime that I have ever seen. No complicated conflicts to deal with, simple, yet likable characters, and a feel akin to a Sono Hanabira visual novel, sweet and idealistic love with no one to get in the way.
19. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Studio DEEN)
MAL SCORE: 8
Higurashi is probably the best horror anime you’re going to get. Living up to the spirit of world-acclaimed Japanese horror, Higurashi messed with my brain more than any American gorefest or crappy local horror movies combined. I always value psychological distress as the most important element of any horror show, and you can bet Higurashi will deliver that and much more. I think that this is the only time that DEEN would ever be successful at anything.
18. Nichijou (Kyoto Animation)
MAL SCORE: 8
Nichijou is a feast for the eyes. It has the best animation for any show that I have ever seen. Fluid, crisp and totally stimulating. This is Kyoto Animation dishing out everything they have for the form of art that is animation. The humor in this show is very hit-or-miss, but what comedy isn’t? Surreal comedy may not be for the masses, but I’m sure as hell that it is for me, one of the best comedies to ever grace my screen.
17. Angel Beats! (PA Works)
MAL SCORE: 8
When it comes to Jun Maeda’s works, I have to admit that I am more than a bit biased. I love how he handles drama, but the thing is with Angel Beats!, I enjoyed the comedy a lot more than the drama. This show nailed it with the flying chairs, corridor traps, TK’s Engrish and all your typical Key humor. It’s not their best work, but it’s definitely the funniest.
16. Seitokai Yakuindomo (GoHands)
MAL SCORE: 8
SYD is one of the few instances that I found standard manzai comedy and sex jokes to be actually funny. So funny, in fact, that I find myself crying from laughing at some of its best jokes. That alone speaks volumes. Also: “JOOOOOO-JIIIIII!!!!!”.
15. Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (Kyoto Animation)
MAL SCORE: 8
Fumoffu is a pain to watch. A pain because I was actually hurting while laughing so hard at Sousuke’s antics as he unknowingly terrorizes the town. Add that high-tech mascot costume to the mix and you’re in for one hell of a ride!

Loved that last message ( ´∀`). And congrats on the move!
Prepared to be stalked COUGH COUGH. I mean, poisoned by my virtual cookies (^ω^)
I will take all the poisoned virtual cookies you give me. I’m immune to poison. And virtual cookies are virtually delicious.
…Damn. This is the part were you’re meant to choke and die. And I’m supposed to go BWHAHAHAHA in victory.
XD
I won’t die even if I’m killed!
Because you made a contract with QB lol ;D
Just another spot to have our usual…”discussions”. Good luck kicking butt over here as well.
I’ll still be posting stuff over there, so don’t worry.
Most yuri stuff are still going to posted there and the more general anime stuff will be posted here.
I have a few questions:
1: Are you content with your existence?
2: Do you have a superiority complex?
3: Chicken or eggs?
4: Epiphanies and depth or casualness?
5: Necronomicon or Scientology?
6: Are you a Squidward?
7: To smile or to frown?
8: Have you ever considered going into robotics?
9: How many times in your life have you contemplated your purpose for being?
10: Yuuna or Eris?
11: Mr L or Light Yagami?
I don’t know why you’re asking me these things, but…
1. I think I am.
2. I guess I do.
3. Eggs.
4. Casualness.
5. Scientology.
6. I don’t know.
7. To smile, most definitely.
8. Nope.
9. I’ve lost count.
10. Yuuna all the way!
11. L is smart, Light is stupid.
Ooooooohhhhhh, just ummm…tch…curious. I learned a lot today and one answer in particular explained everything I wanted to know about you. Thank you for answering good sir.
